DESCRIPTION: Lane County School District 4J is building a replacement for the Roosevelt Middle School located at 680 E 24th Avenue in Eugene, Oregon. The $41.4 M replacement facility will be a two‑story structure with an estimated gross floor area of ±98,000 SF. The new school is being built in the original soccer fields to the west of the existing school. The existing school building will be demolished and replaced by play fields and tennis courts.
SERVICE: Foundation Engineering was retained by the school district to complete a geotechnical investigation and seismic hazard study for the project. Our scope of work included exploratory drilling, laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and development of recommendations for site preparation, foundations and pavements. Foundation Engineering also completed a study of infiltration rates of local soils for the design of an on-site drainage disposal system. Project challenges included the presence of a deep deposit of high plasticity clays. Driven steel piles and a structural floor built on degradable cardboard forms were chosen to mitigate the risk from expansive soils. Site grading and pile driving have been completed and construction is underway. The new school is scheduled to open in the fall 2016. Foundation Engineering provided construction observation and consultation during the installation of 441 pipe piles.
