DESCRIPTION: The North Mall Office Building was built by the Department of Administrative Services as a pilot project to study new methods for sustainable design. The multi-story office building contains numerous sustainable building elements, and houses the Oregon Parks & Recreation Dept., the Dept. of Housing and Community Services, and the Water Resources Dept. The ±105,000 SF structure has two components: a three-story segment running east-west and a two-story segment along Winter Street. The structure as one below-grade parking level and is supported by spread footings bearing on alluvial gravel.
SERVICE: Foundation Engineering completed a geotechnical investigation for the project. Our scope of work included exploratory drilling, laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and development of recommendations for site preparation and foundation design and construction. A drainage system was installed since the ground water level is expected to rise above the floor of the below-grade parking structure. Foundation Engineering provided estimated infiltration rates for the design of the drainage system and provided field support services during foundation construction.
