DESCRIPTION: Foundation Engineering has been providing geotechnical consultation for landslides in Cowlitz County, Washington since 1992. The winter of 2009 was particularly busy. That winter, we provided emergency response for over 40 sites in Cowlitz County.
SERVICE: As part of our emergency response, we performed reconnaissance and assessment of each site with County personnel. The site assessments included evaluation of slope and embankment stability and identification of potential mitigation methods.
Of the sites initially visited, 20 were selected for further engineering services including geotechnical investigations, laboratory testing and geotechnical analysis and design, and preparation of recommendations for design and construction.
Foundation Engineering also provided design-phase services for 20 sites including design of tie‑back soldier pile walls, embankment reconstruction, horizontal drains, shear key buttresses, and shear piles. Our team assisted Cowlitz County in discussions with FEMA to obtain Federal assistance with project funding. Construction-phase services included construction observations, review of contractor submittals, and testing of tie-back anchors for soldier pile walls.
